San Jose Giants, Oakland Ballers begin new Battle of the Bay as minor league baseball embraces major rivalry
SAN JOSE — Orange and black. Green and gold. “Let's go, Giants!” “Let's go, Oakland!” If you closed your eyes – or opened them at the right time – on Wednesday night in San Jose, it almost felt the same. The Bay Bridge Series – or the Battle of the Bay , whichever you prefer – is no more. The now-former Oakland A's made sure of that when they picked up and moved on to Sacramento for a layover that will allegedly end with the final destination of Las Vegas. Flags are flown outside of Excite Ballpark before the Oakland Ballers versus the San Jose Giants game for the “Battle of the Bay 2.0” in San Jose, Calif., on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. (Nhat V. San Jose Giants beat Oakland Ballers in Bay Area baseball exhibition, evoking memories of original Battle of the Bay
The matchup was the first-ever contest between affiliated and independent baseball teams, a new rivalry dubbed the “Battle of the Bay 2.0.” While it can't replace the now-extinct rivalry between the Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants — the first iteration of a professional cross-Bay baseball battle — the competition between the two minor-league clubs renewed the spirit of the original series.

San Francisco Giants' Bob Melvin Loving What He Is Seeing From His Ace on the Mound
The San Francisco Giants know that if they are going to be competitive this season, it will be on the back of their pitching. Manager Bob Melvin is still seeking the right combination to rely on for the lineup, as there are a few players off to startlingly slow starts. Two starters, catcher Patrick Bailey and first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr., are hitting under .100. Star free-agent addition, shortstop Willy Adames, hasn't heated up yet, hitting .158 with one double, still waiting for his first home run with his new team.

Wilmer Flores slugged his fourth home run of the season, Heliot Ramos extended his extra-base hit streak and the visiting San Francisco Giants completed a three-game interleague sweep of the Houston Astros with a 6-3 victory on Wednesday. Flores belted the first of three homers by the Giants and ignited an early ambush of Astros left-hander Framber Valdez (1-1).
