Diamondbacks 6-4 Giants (Sep 4, 2024) Game Recap
SAN FRANCISCO -- — Zac Gallen pitched six hitless innings for his 50th career victory and the Arizona Diamondbacks held on to beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4 on Wednesday night. Gallen (11-6) had eight strikeouts, threw 63 of 100 pitches for strikes and overcame four walks to win for the second time in six starts. “For the most part I stuck to my plan,” Gallen said. Eugenio Suárez and Pavin Smith hit solo home runs to help the Diamondbacks (79-61) move within five games of the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fitzgerald seventh-inning single breaks up Diamondbacks' bid for no-hitter against Giants
Tyler Fitzgerald singled off reliever Kevin Ginkel leading off the seventh inning to end the Arizona Diamondbacks' bid for a no-hitter Wednesday night. Fitzgerald, one of San Francisco's best hitters this season, singled on an 0-1 pitch from Ginkel, who relieved Zac Gallen after the starter threw 100 pitches over six innings.
The SF Giants improved attendance in 2024, but could September hurt their progress?
On Tuesday night, Oracle Park was the emptiest it has been all year, at least if announced paid attendance is the closest data point to gospel there is. The Giants drew 23,545 fans for their series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a few hundred fewer than their previous season-low set on an April Monday against the Mets. Many fans stuck around for San Francisco's eighth and ninth inning rallies — which ultimately fell short — and made themselves heard during the comeback efforts. “Obviously, you see it, but it is what it is,” 2024 All-Star Heliot Ramos told this news organization.
San Francisco Giants Have Exciting Outfield Prospect Group
The San Francisco Giants have graduated a lot of prospects over the last couple of seasons, most notably their top players in Marco Luciano, Kyle Harrison and Heliot Ramos. According to MLB Pipeline, they have a top ten system in terms of outfield prospects. A big reason for San Francisco being number nine on this list is the work they did in the 2024 draft. The Giants selected James Tibbs III with the 13th overall pick and he now sits at number two in their system and 93rd in baseball.
Zac Gallen in Need of Rebound Start as D-backs face Giants
The Arizona Diamondbacks are 78-61, coming off a tight 8-7 victory against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park on Tuesday. First pitch is at 6:45 p.m. Arizona time. With the persistent Mets and Padres refusing to slump, the D-backs hold a slim 3.0 game lead in the Wild Card race, currently occupying the second slot. Zac Gallen had another rough month in August, and was roughed up for five runs in five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers his last time out.
Fast-Rising San Francisco Giants Prospect Rockets into Top 100
It's been a great few days for San Francisco Giants first base prospect Bryce Eldridge, the latest honor being a move into Baseball America's Top 100 prospects for September. While Eldridge was a member of MLB Pipeline's Top 100 last month, he didn't make the cut in Baseball America's Top 100 when the site re-ranked in August after the MLB draft.
Giants named landing spot for projected $288 million star free agent
The San Francisco Giants made a big-time pitching addition right before the start of the 2024 season when they signed Blake Snell. With Snell likely to opt out in search of the long-term deal that eluded him this season, the Giants could be in the market for a new ace. Looking ahead at the next offseason, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer listed the Giants as a top landing spot for 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes.
Randal Grichuk Homers Twice as Diamondbacks Hold off Giants
Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo drive in the fifth to move within one of 300 for his career, and the Arizona Diamondbacks held off the San Francisco Giants 8-7 on Tuesday night for their seventh straight road win. RHP Zac Gallen (10-6, 3.87 ERA), 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 29 strikeouts over his last four outings at Oracle Park, pitches the middle game of the series for Arizona opposite RHP Hayden Birdsong (3-4, 5.14) on Wednesday.
San Francisco Giants Left-Hander Named NL Pitcher of the Month
In the month of August, the Giants were one-game over .500, as they had a 14-13 record. While a winning month was great to see, it wasn't enough to help them gain any ground in the extremely competitive National League Wild Card race. Due to the Giants never really having an excellent month at any point this season, it is easy to see why they have been hovering around the .500 mark for most of 2024. Left-hander Blake Snell was able to put together one of the best months we will see from any pitcher in any month in August.
What Giants have planned for Luciano, Matos after latest promotions
For the second time in a month, Marco Luciano is in the big leagues with the promise of a long runway to show what he can do. Tuesday afternoon's call-up from Triple-A was the third of the year and second since the All-Star break for Luciano, although the last one proved to be much shorter than he expected and the Giants said it would be. After dumping Jorge Soler's salary on the Atlanta Braves, they talked of letting Luciano be the everyday DH, but it wasn't long before Jerar Encarnacion, Michael Conforto and others were soaking up those at-bats. This time, Luciano is up as a second baseman, and there's a lot less competition there.
Randal Grichuk homers twice, Diamondbacks hold off Giants 8-7
Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo drive in the fifth to move within one of 300 for his career, and the Arizona Diamondbacks held off the San Francisco Giants 8-7 on Tuesday night for their seventh straight road win. Grichuk had his 12th career multi-homer game and first in nearly two years since connecting twice for Colorado on Sept. 6, 2022, against Milwaukee. "He's hot, and when he's hot he can carry a ballclub," manager Torey Lovullo said. Grichuk's big bat helped Ryne Nelson (10-6) reach double-digit victories for the first time in his career in just the second win in six games overall for Arizona, which holds the second NL wild card spot.
D-backs hope stellar version of Zac Gallen shows up to face Giants
The Arizona Diamondbacks hope August inconsistency can be turned into September and October consistency when they send ace Zac Gallen to face the San Francisco Giants in the second contest of their three-game series Wednesday night. Struggling to retain their National League wild-card playoff position, the Diamondbacks nearly blew a late five-run lead in Tuesday's series opener in San Francisco but held on for an 8-7 victory. Wins by the Diamondbacks (78-61) and Atlanta Braves (75-63) allowed each to gain a half-game on the NL wild-card-leading San Diego Padres (79-61), who were idle Tuesday.

Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson continues to prove himself vs. Giants
Arizona Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson delivered a fifth straight quality start in an 8-7 win against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, giving the club a much-needed excellent start in a rotation that has scuffled of late. The Diamondbacks led 7-2 after Nelson's outing, as he struck out nine batters through 6.2 innings with two earned runs. Nelson has pitched through six innings in nine of his last 11 starts, and Arizona has a 9-2 record.
