Giants notes: Beck makes roster case as team wins eighth straight
The 161st game of the 2024 MLB season was not one that anyone will remember. The Giants edged the St. Louis Cardinals in a matchup of disappointing teams that had long since been eliminated from the playoff race. Beck threw four innings and allowed one run in his first start of the year, but it's not the result that was meaningful. Beck missed most of the season after needing surgery last March to remove an aneurysm from his upper right arm.

Don't expect end to be near for one-in-a-billion wonder Justin Verlander
Jon Heyman Don't expect end to be near for one-in-a-billion wonder Justin Verlander By Jon Heyman Published March 12, 2025, 8:18 p.m. ET San Francisco Giants pitcher Justin Verlander throws against the Chicago White Sox during the fourth inning of a spring training baseball game, Thursday, March 6, 2025, in Scottsdale, Ariz. AP Photo/Matt York SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — When news broke that Justin Verlander signed with the Giants for $15 million heading into his age-42 season — off a 5.48 ERA no less — I just figured he was as great a negotiator as he was a pitcher. That's on me. No one should doubt Verlander can pitch until he's 45, or longer. He's occasionally mentioned that number as an exit target
Giants notes: Could slight role change be coming for Ramos?
Giants manager Bob Melvin made some waves last month -- especially in South Korea -- when he announced that Jung Hoo Lee likely would hit third instead of leadoff. Heliot Ramos hit leadoff against Athletics lefty Jeffrey Springs on Tuesday night, and Melvin was intrigued by the way it looked. During a breakout 2024 MLB season, Ramos essentially turned into Aaron Judge against lefties.

SF Giants' Verlander remains sharp, Ramos sees time at leadoff
The Giants couldn't say for certain what they were getting when they signed Justin Verlander. The Giants, still, cannot say for certain what they are getting with Justin Verlander. Verlander turned in his longest outing of Cactus League play as the Giants beat the A's, 5-3, on Tuesday evening at Scottsdale Stadium, allowing one earned run on a solo homer over five innings with four strikeouts. Between his three Cactus League starts and his Papago Park outing, Verlander owns 3.21 ERA with 13 strikeouts to three walks over 14 innings.
'We could've been something super special': How A's lack of spending wasn't limited to contracts
Before the A's officially left Oakland, the largest contract they ever dolled out was a six-year, $66 million deal to star third baseman Eric Chavez in 2004. Only now that they've left Oakland have the A's opened up their pocketbooks. In recent months, the A's have doled out three of the largest contracts in franchise history. Right-hander Luis Severino signed a three-year, $67 million deal in December to break Chavez's record.
Battle of the Bay 2.0: Oakland Ballers, San Jose Giants set to create new regional baseball rivalry
The Bay Area's two minor league teams are picking up the regional baseball rivalry that used to be reserved for the Giants and A's. The San Jose Giants and the Oakland Ballers also will make a little history when they meet in San Jose in April. The teams announced Tuesday that they will play an exhibition game on April 2 at San Jose's Excite Ballpark.
Enticing Young San Francisco Giants Pitcher Makes Another Spring Statement
Every team always needs more good pitching, but the San Francisco Giants are seeing their young pitching prospects show how capable they are of providing it throughout this spring training. Ace Logan Webb took the hill on Monday in an 8-2 win over the Colorado Rockies, and while San Francisco's entrenched ace did his job in the game, but his performance was not the most noteworthy on the mound for the orange and black. Birdsong worked the last three innings of the Giants' win, and he did not surrender a hit or a run while striking out four Colorado hitters to close out the victory.
