Kurtenbach: Top free agent Roki Sasaki said no to the SF Giants. Of course he did

Mon, 2025-01-13 16:25

Like every competent team in baseball, the Giants were in on the hot-shot Japanese free-agent pitcher, who, like Shohei Ohtani before him, is limited to signing a minor-league deal with a Major League team. Then again, so did the White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. The Giants cannot land free agents without overpaying the market.

The San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers have been informed Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki won't be signing with them. Giants general manager Zack Minasian announced during a news conference Monday to introduce Justin Verlander that San Francisco no longer was in contention. Sasaki's decision to eliminate the Yankees and Rangers was disclosed to The Associated Press by people familiar with the negotiations.

Giants 'make the most sense' to sign projected $63 million Dodgers hurler

Mon, 2025-01-13 15:51

Fresh off a World Series championship, could a free agent starter who helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win a ring in 2024 be on the move to the San Francisco Giants? A new report from Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller indicates that may be the case. All eyes around Major League Baseball are currently watching what Rōki Sasaki's going to do, but beyond Sasaki, there's a 29-year-old former Detroit Tiger with the potential to add immense value to the rotation of the franchise that signs him, per Miller. “Aside from Sasaki, Jack Flaherty is the biggest name still out there, and by a wide margin,” Miller said.

The San Francisco Giants made a splash by signing Willy Adames this offseason. The Giants gave Willy Adames the largest deal in franchise history. Just Baseball's Clay Snowden named the Giants as a potential landing spot for Randal Grichuk.

San Francisco Giants Have Shed Major Payroll With More Moves Potentially Coming

Mon, 2025-01-13 14:30

The San Francisco Giants ushered in the next era of their front office this offseason and made it clear they are willing to spend money for star players. With that willingness, though, they have still managed to shed major payroll. Jon Becker of FanGraphs released a graph that shows the difference in payroll from last year to this one. While it is likely their number grows a bit, they are still in a good spot with their payroll given the signings already made this offseason.

The San Francisco Giants reportedly have been told that Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki will not be signing with them during his signing window that opens on Jan. 15, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Giants general manager Zack Minasian gave the update during a call regarding the signing of veteran starter Justin Verlander, according to Slusser. The Giants did meet in person with Roki Sasaki this offseason.

Mon, 2025-01-13 09:52

Entering his second year as outfielder for the San Francisco Giants, Lee Jung-hoo said Monday he would love nothing more than to stay healthy in 2025. Lee left for the U.S. on Monday to prepare for his second season in Major League Baseball. Lee, who signed a six-year, $113 million contract with the Giants in December 2023, finished his rookie campaign with a .262/.310/.331 batting line, two home runs, eight RBIs and two steals.

Wednesday is the first day of Major League Baseball's international signing period.

San Francisco Giants Starting Rotation Has Depth, Incredible Upside

Sun, 2025-01-12 15:00

The San Francisco Giants have one of the most reliable aces in baseball with Logan Webb anchoring their rotation. After losing Blake Snell in free agency to the Los Angeles Dodgers, they could certainly use another top-end starter. Jack Flaherty would be an excellent target, especially with his willingness to accept a short-term deal, similar to how the team landed Snell ahead of 2024. The only addition the team has made to the starting rotation thus far this offseason is veteran Justin Verlander, who struggled with staying healthy and effective on the mound this past campaign.

San Francisco Giants Predicted To Sign World Series Champion Reliever

Sat, 2025-01-11 11:00

Pitching has been a focus for the San Francisco Giants, and the front office has dealt with that. Having as much pitching as possible is never a bad plan, and for a Giants team that could be better in the rotation and bullpen, expect another move or two this offseason. San Francisco, looking to compete for a playoff spot in 2025, could benefit from adding a veteran reliever. Instead, the Giants should look for a mid-tier, buy-low reliever.

San Francisco Giants Boast Intriguing Potential Breakthrough Prospects

Sat, 2025-01-11 08:00

When it comes to the San Francisco Giants' farm system, much of the discussion is around first baseman Bryce Eldridge. The 2023 first-round pick cruised through the entire Giants' farm system in 2024 and is now considered to be one of the top prospects in all of baseball. If he progresses in 2025 the way he did last season, he could be the Giants' first baseman sometime this year. Eldridge's growing reputation overshadows the rest of the farm system, which is not ranked among the best in baseball.

San Francisco Giants Deal Star Reliever, Acquire Slugger In Wild Trade Proposal

Fri, 2025-01-10 19:00

The San Francisco Giants have made some nice moves this offseason, but it feels like there's still some work to do. Depending on how aggressive Buster Posey wants to get, he could hit the trade market to fill some holes as most of the top free agents have gone dry. In order to upgrade the lineup via trade however, San Francisco would likely have to ship off someone on their big league roster. With one of the weaker farm systems in baseball and top prospect Bryce Eldridge rightfully seen as untouchable, there's not much wiggle room to deal a minor leaguer.

San Francisco Giants Avoid Arbitration Agreeing to Deals With Stellar Bullpen Duo

Fri, 2025-01-10 17:00

The arbitration deadline wasn't as busy for the San Francisco Giants as some teams around the league as they had only four players who were eligible this offseason. It took longer to agree to deals with the other players, but the Giants will not be going to arbitration hearings with any of their players as they all agreed to deals ahead of the deadline on Jan. 9, 2025.

San Francisco Giants Signing Outfielder To Huge Contract Named 'Worst Recent Mistake'

Fri, 2025-01-10 11:00

The San Francisco Giants have finally started to open up their check books again, getting over the hump since their last big failed free agent signing. ESPN's David Schoenfield recently looked through each MLB team's immediate history to find their worst mistake since 2020. One Giants contract stood out above the rest. It wasn't long ago, free agency ahead of the 2023 season, that San Francisco gave outfielder Mitch Haniger a three-year, $43.5 million deal.
