Dingler and Vierling homer, Tigers hold off Giants 5-4 to avoid sweep
Dillon Dingler hit his first career home run, Matt Vierling also went deep, and the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Sunday to avoid the three-game series sweep. Colt Keith added two hits and an RBI and three Tigers relievers combined for four shutout innings to back rookie Keider Montero’s uneven outing. Detroit’s 19th one-run win of the season snapped a three-game losing streak for manager A.J. Hinch’s ballclub.
San Francisco Giants Southpaw Shows Consistent Growth to Start Career
The San Francisco Giants took a chance on a small school prospect a couple of years ago and they have started to look smart for it. As Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report looked around the MLB farm systems for breakout players, Jack Choate was found to be the guy for the Giants. "A ninth-round pick in 2022 who is trying to become the first player from Assumption College in Massachusetts to reach the majors, Choate has put together a quietly excellent season, albeit a bit behind the developmental curve," said Reuter. "He started the year with a 2.90 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 77.2 innings at High-A before earning a promotion to Double-A earlier this month."

Bruce Bochy offers heartfelt message amid Giants World Series reunion
Former San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy has some words he wants to share with members of the 2014 World Series team. Bochy recorded a message that was shared with members of the 2014 club for their 10-year World Series reunion. Bochy managed the Giants that season. “When I think about this group, I think about the unselfishness in which they played,” Bochy said in the video, per NBC Sports.
San Francisco Giants Decide on Replacement for All-Star Closer
The San Francisco Giants made a shocking move on Friday by demoting closer Camilo Doval to Triple-A Sacramento. While manager Bob Melvin had said it would just be one pitcher, nothing had been decided until Saturday, when Ryan Walker was given the job. Walker has been excellent for the Giants this season, and maybe their best reliever. In 60.1 innings, he has struck out 71 batters with a 2.24 ERA.
Giants, on a roll, aim for sweep of Tigers
The San Francisco Giants hope to continue to take advantage of a soft stretch in their schedule when they go for a home-series sweep over the tail-spinning Detroit Tigers on Sunday. Six games under .500 on July 25 and considered potential sellers at the trade deadline, the Giants have gone 12-3 against a run of teams with losing records -- the Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals and Tigers. The burst has lifted the Giants three games over .500 for the first time this season, with not only the Tigers awaiting Sunday but the struggling Atlanta Braves for four games before seeing the A's again for two and Chicago White Sox for three.
San Francisco Giants Re-sign Versatile Reliever to Minor League Deal
Spencer Howard's circuitous road these past two seasons led back to San Francisco, as the Giants signed him to a minor-league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Sacramento. Howard pitched on Friday for the River Cats and threw a scoreless inning. The 28-year-old right-hander has been a free agent since July 28 when he opted to test the market instead of accepting an assignment to Cleveland's Triple-A affiliate in Columbus after he cleared waivers. Because he's a minor-league signing, if the Giants call him up it will require both a 40-man and 26-man roster move.
Wisely's 2-run double powers Giants to a 3-1 win over Tigers
Brett Wisely hit a two-run double in the fifth inning and the San Francisco Giants rebounded after being no-hit for four innings, beating the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Saturday. After being held without a hit for four innings by Detroit's Alex Faedo and Brant Hurter (0-1), the Giants opened the fifth with consecutive singles by Mike Yastrzemski and Jerar Encarnacion before Wisely drove in two runs with a double down the right-field line.
Taking cues from 2014 team, SF Giants appear to be hitting stride at right time
If these Giants were looking for motivation with six weeks left in their improbable playoff push, the 2014 team that celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its World Series title on the field before Saturday's game provided a tried and true formula. Behind seven strong innings from Logan Webb and just enough timely hitting, they picked up their fourth win in a row, 3-1 over the Detroit Tigers, matching their season-long winning streak but showing increasing signs of staying power. The win was the Giants' sixth in their past seven games, their 12th in 15 since July 25, and clinched their fifth series win in a row. Improving to 61-58, the Giants moved three games above .500 for the first time all season.
Texas Rangers Passed on Bold Pitching Move at Trade Deadline
The Texas Rangers made moves to improve their bullpen and to acquire an extra bat. The Rangers were one of six teams that inquired about San Francisco Giants left-hander Blake Snell at the trade deadline, according to the New York Post. When he returned in July, however, he looked like the pitcher who previously won two Cy Young awards. In his first start after the trade deadline he threw a no-hitter.
Reticent of spotlight, Madison Bumgarner can't avoid center of attention at SF Giants' World Series reunion
There is only one place, Madison Bumgarner explained, that he felt comfortable being the center of attention. It stands to reason, then, that Saturday didn't come easy for the 2014 World Series MVP. “I think it's important that you're here,” Duane Kuiper, the master of ceremonies, told Bumgarner. Interrupting Bumgarner with a standing ovation as soon as he attempted to answer Kuiper's first question, there was no doubt what he meant to this fanbase or his contributions to their three World Series titles in five years.
